Why the freeze in Europe could be good news for the economy
Article Abstract:
Unusually cold weather in Europe is already having an economic impact, with the construction industry being severely hampered in its activities and prices of seasonal vegetables rising. Energy output has risen, but this has not produced a marked rise in the oil price as yet. Research indicates that an average cold winter reduces GDP by 0.2% during that actual winter, but that there is extra growth following a cold winter, more than balancing out the initial decline. It is possible that the current exceptionally cold weather will have implications beyond this general trend.

The bonds that tie low inflation to the information society
Article Abstract:
The world economy will be boosted by the development of information technology, but information technology will also serve to increase income differentials in the western world. This is because low skilled people in developed countries will increasingly have to compete against low skilled people from lower wage economies. This argument, presented by David Owen of Kleinwort Benson, has some validity. It is almost certain there there is a link between growing income inequality and increasing need for skills which the information age requires.

Taking a peek into the future
Article Abstract:
The likely nature and pace of technological change is one of the key issues being discussed by the Global Business Network (GBN), a group of forward planners and thinkers from across the world. Experts have put forward a number of different scenarios for technological developments. It is possible that businesses will 'lock-in' to new technology at a relatively early stage, running the risk that the best technology is not yet available, or that change will be continuous, with new technology emerging all the time.
