Wheeler-dealer frenzy is all set to continue
Article Abstract:
The media sector in the UK is set to see significant changes in 1997, especially with the launch of Channel 5, further consolidation in the ITV sector and the establishment of digital television. There will be a shift towards extensive reform of advertising sales at ITV, and it is likely that questions will continue to be asked about the public service role of Channel 4. Both Channel 4 and ITV will be under threat from the launch of Channel 5, the UK's last 'free' television service.

Actors take up arms over the TV gold rush
Article Abstract:
Many actors in the UK are greatly concerned about moves by Equity, the actors' union, to reach a deal with the BBC and ITV which would create a pay framework for programme sales to cable and satellite broadcasters. The new deal would do away with the existing 'residuals' system of payment to actors when programmes are repeated, creating instead a royalty payment. Actors would receive 17% of the price for which the programme is sold, rather than a percentage of the original fee.
