Why universities love to hate the number-crunchers
Article Abstract:
Most UK universities are strongly opposed to league tables, but also analyze them very closely to see how they are ranked compared with rival institutions. Some observers believe that universities are too different from each other to really be compared properly, and claim that the performance indicators used by those who compile league tables are misleading. In particular, new universities object to being assessed on the basis of criteria that are more adapted to the purposes of old universities.

So, who wins the egghead prizes?
Article Abstract:
More than half of all the academics in the assessment of the research performance of UK universities have received a top 5 or 5* grade. A high score is supposed to attract additional funding, but the Higher Education Funding council does not have any funds available. This will lead to greater rivalry between the different institutions.
