Will Labour's Welfare to Work really work?
Article Abstract:
The UK's new Labour government is certainly firmly committed to dealing with unemployment. However, there are mixed views about whether it will be able to convert talk about job creation into reality. Its Welfare to Work strategy will benefit from favourable macroeconomic conditions, but some observers are expressing doubts about specific elements of the policy. It is possible that the government will have to rely more heavily than anticipated on temporary environmental or community work schemes to meet Welfare to Work targets.

Honesty is the best policy when it comes to jobs
Article Abstract:
The recent admission by education and employment secretary Gillian Shephard that tackling unemployment will bring certain difficulties is a sign that the UK government is at least facing up to reality. At present, its focus on deregulated flexibility is endangering social cohesion and placing great burdens on those in low-paid employment. It is now time for politicians to openly admit that pain will be associated with tackling unemployment and to look at how best to share this pain evenly.

Wanted: a warts-and-all tally of UK's jobless
Article Abstract:
The UK government's approach to calculating unemployment is extremely misleading, even though it is widely recognised that reliable unemployment figures are vital in making macro-economic and employment policy decisions. It is now time to seek a range of unemployment measures which, when taken as a whole, give a truly representative picture of unemployment. The best approach may be to adopt the US-style spectrum approach to measuring unemployment.
