Witness from the front line of a police force bent on brutality
Article Abstract:
Police brutality in Algeria is described by a former police officer who witnessed many episodes of torture. Prisoners had to sign confessions blindfold and so were unware of what they signed. Men sometimes died during the torture. The torturers saw their actions as a way of combating terrorism and a route to promotion. The effect on the police officer was to create serious psychological problems. She had to leave the police force after being criticised for providing medicine for a prisoner suffering from gangrene.

Gunmen hold fast to divided city
Article Abstract:
The town of Mostar will be a vital element in the peace plan for Bosnia. It has two front lines, dividing the Muslim, Croat and Serb communities, and has been the scene of bitter conflict. Some 1,400 Muslims have been killed in Croat attacks, and Serb shelling continues. Many residents regard the peace initiative as having little relevance to everyday life there.
