Wrong turning in a minefield
Article Abstract:
Landmines can have the positive effect of keeping out unwanted attackers during wartime, although they can kill or maim the innocent in peacetime. Some villagers in Cambodia prefer to be surrounded by landmines as they keep out the advancing Khmer Rouge, according to expert Mike Croll of the charitable mine-clearance organisation HALO. The landmine ban has had the adverse effect of making the public perceive the problem is over, while no existing landmines have been cleared and innocent civilians continue to become victims. Countries at risk from war are least likely to introduce the ban.

Hey, big spender!
Article Abstract:
Compulsive shopping is becoming a growing social problem, most among women. New research shows that this is one of many kinds of addictive behaviour which has its origins in depression, childhood deprivations, loneliness or a lack of a sense of fulfilment. Some people shop compulsively in order to take revenge against their partner, and are therefore acting very rationally, while others seek instant gratification in order to help them forget their problems.
