Yard links record crime in London to the recession
Article Abstract:
A high ranking policeman, Commander David Stevens, cited a connection between London's high crime levels and economic deprivation. He called for the Government to recognise the link although he emphasized that crime had other causes also. These views may invite accusations against the police of abdicating their own responsibilities as 1991 crime figures for London are the highest ever. The Labour Party urged the Government to heed Commander Stevens' comments. Government spokesmen replied that a review of policing policy was in progress.
