You listen to Radio 4, but will Radio 4 listen to you?
Article Abstract:
Radio 4 controller James Boyle and a small group of Radio 4 staff have been touring the UK since the second half of 1997 in an effort to gain an insight into what ordinary listeners really want from Radio 4. Boyle makes presentations to many different listener groups, emphasizing Radio 4's commitment to high quality broadcasting. Participants are then split into smaller seminar groups on the basis of their interests, with each group working with a producer, a Radio 4 executive and a facilitator. Boyle seems to be genuinely concerned about what ordinary listeners think, rather than simply running a media exercise.

He thinks he's God, but can he run a radio station?
Article Abstract:
The purchase by disc jockey Chris Evans of a 55% stake in Virgin Radio in an 83 million pounds sterling deal has been greeted with surprise by some observers. They point out that creative ability is generally not a good qualification for business success. However, Evans has already shown business expertise, with his company Ginger Productions now valued at 30 million pounds sterling. He is negotiating to keep 'TFI Friday,' his television programme, on Channel 4 in deal believed to be worth 20 million pounds sterling, and has gained a strong reputation for being able to spot talent.

Magic on the air at Radio Five
Article Abstract:
Radio Five Live's 'Breakfast Show' has won the highly respected Sony Award for best breakfast news and talk show. This was one of seven awards won by Radio Five Live at the 1998 Sonys. 'Breakfast Show' has a light touch that is very popular with listeners, and also appeals to politicians because its format is relatively informal. Radio Five Live as a whole has gained popularity partly because of moves to eliminate the barriers between programmes. It now has an average audience of 5.6 million listeners a week.
