You need a referral, not a plane ticket
Article Abstract:
A considerable number of British people with brain tumours have been treated successfully in the US over recent years, having been told by British doctors that their tumour was inoperable. However, some of the UK's leading paediatric neurosurgeons are now saying that it was unnecessary for these people to have raised large sums of money to be treated in the US. They are trying to clarify the confusion over the availability of treatment for brain tumours, especially for children. It is now becoming clear that many patients were not offered treatment in the UK simply because they were not referred to the right specialist.

In this beautiful Welsh valley, there'll be a hell of a party for Millennium Eve - on 13 January
Article Abstract:
The around 200 residents of the remote Gwaun Valley in Pembrokeshire, Wales, continue to use the Julian calendar to mark the date on which New Year will fall, even though the Gregorian calendar was introduced in the UK in 1752. This means that they will celebrate the arrival of the 21st century on Jan 13, 2000. There is a long tradition in the area of specific events associated with New Year. One of the most important events now is the 'calennig,' with children going from house to house singing for sweets or money.

Patients join the fight to curtail shock treatment
Article Abstract:
Mental health charity Mind is soon to launch a campaign to draw attention to the fact that electric shock treatment (ECT) is still widely used on women, especially the middle-aged and elderly. It believes that patients are often not offered alternative treatment and that ECT is used too frequently. Psychiatrists claim that there are high success rates with ECT, and are concerned that growing public opposition to it is influencing treatment decisions.
