Now anyone can be Nelson Mandela
Article Abstract:
Lord Tebbitt, speaking to Young Conservatives, likened difficulties faced by people campaigning to change the law in the UK to the problems faced by South African blacks before the abolition of apartheid. It seems that he is now able to understand South African blacks, even though he expressed no sympathy for their plight while apartheid was still in place. His attitude reflects a general fear within the Conservative party for the future of the democratic process if the abolition of internal borders within Europe includes the UK.

There's no trumping Mr Major
Article Abstract:
Prime minister John Major is a decent, honest man who should not be blamed for the government's current unpopularity, according to writer David Hare in a recent newspaper column. He believes that the present problems stem from the time of Margaret Thatcher, but that John Major is too decent to blame her. This view is totally misguided, as John Major cannot be detached from the Thatcher era in this way. It is also not true to say that the Conservative party's unpopularity stems from the poor quality of its cabinet ministers.

Rare collection that inspires passion
Article Abstract:
The Royal Horticultural Society's (RHS) Lindley Library in central London has a unique collection of botanical and garden history books. Many of these are regarded as works of art in themselves, and nowadays it would be impossible to raise the funds to build up such a collection from scratch. There has been considerable opposition to plans to move the library, which is now short of space, to Wisley, Surrey, as this would make it much less accessible to RHS members and the general public.
