Zaire's rebels prove a powerful force for change in Africa
Article Abstract:
A very large area of Africa is being affected by the repercussions of the success of rebel forces against the government of president Mobutu Sese Seko in Zaire. The rebellion in Zaire has had an impact on the course of the civil conflict in Sudan, and has also revived prospects for the peace process in Angola by closing supply routes through Zaire which were being used by Unita rebels. Some observers believe that the rebels in Zaire have been colluding with those in other countries, and some even believe that foreign powers have been involved.

'Winne, the arch-manipulator, reduced South Africa's time for healing to little more than a cheap gameshow.' (Truth and Reconciliation Commission fails to take action against Winnie Madikizela-Mandela)
Article Abstract:
South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) has heard some very disturbing evidence against Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, particularly in relation to the activities of her Mandela United Football Club. However, it has failed to take decisive action against her. It seems that race is a key consideration, with Mrs Mandela being exempt from punishment because she is a prominent black leader. This episode has seriously devalued the TRC.
