Republicans take ax to NOAA research
Article Abstract:
Republican congressman have proposed to dismantle NOAA as part of their plan to eliminate the Commerce Dept. The proposal took NOAA officials by surprise. They expected that most NOAA functions would simply be shifted to the Interior Dept.

A House bill supported by Republicans would authorize $21.5 billion to fund seven civilian research agencies in the 1996 budget. Democrats oppose the plan, saying it reduces funding for important nonmedical research programs.
