Article Abstract:
The Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) radio telescope will be brought on line in the spring of 1993. The VLBA is comprised of a network of 10 new radio antennas that will be spread from Hawaii to the Virgin Islands and will mimic a single radio telescope about 8000 kilometers in diameter.

World Bank report calls for network to bolster research
Article Abstract:
A 1993 World Bank report recommends the establishment of an international body to coordinate health research and ensure funding for research laboratories in developing countries. The report is based on data that indicates that too little is spent on diseases that do the most harm.

New EMBL director reaches out to southern Europe

The EMBL's new director, US-educated Greek geneticist Kafatos, seeks to recruit researchers from southern Europe in a US-style affirmative action program. The region has been underrepresented though it has contributed funds, and Italy has already threatened to withdraw.
