The 1909 discovery of Trypanosoma crusi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, has had a great impact on biology as a research discipline in Brazil. Fighting the parasite has led to international collaboration and the use of cutting-edge technology and research methods.

Physicists hand-build a synchrotron

Physicists and artisans are building a 29-meter-diameter electron storage ring, which they hope will enable them to compete with Europeans and Americans in materials science. The project was initiated in 1985 and is expected to be completed in 1996.
