A diabetes switch? Turning off a single gene protects mice against obesity and type II diabetes
Article Abstract:
Researchers at the Merck Frosst Center for Therapeutic Research in Kirkland, Quebec, have identified an enzyme called PTP-1B that plays a crucial role in obesity and type II diabetes. Experiments with mice revealed that an absence of PTP-1B (protein tyrosine phosphatase-1B), which is created by a single gene, protects against obesity, a discovery that could lead to the manufacture of drugs that allow individuals to eat a high-fat diet without gaining weight and contracting type II diabetes.

Breath of fresh liquid
Article Abstract:
The introduction of liquid perfluorocarbons into the lungs of people with respiratory problems allows them to breathe and saves their lives. Plasma and inflammatory agents filling the lungs cause breathing problems and these can be flushed out by oxygen-rich perfluorocarbons.
