The researchers are trying to develop systems that can automatically record communications, documents, images and video and store everything in a personal digital searchable archive. Devising software for organizing the information and ensuring that archives are secure are quite challenging, but these digital memories might be beneficial in medical care, job productivity and other areas.

Ensuring the longevity of digital documents

The media on which digital information is stored are subject to the twin threats of premature obsolescence and physical decay, which calls into question the long-term survivability of the data stored on such media. Traditional, paper-based archiving methods will likely remain in use.

The formation of electronic libraries that can be accessed through the Internet would open up many learning and education possibilities for a global audience. Possible hindrances to the building of electronic libraries are technological obsolescence and digital conversion costs.
