Improving research opportunities in China are motivating Chinese scientists to return from abroad, reversing the brain drain. Academic salaries are far lower that those in business, so the government is setting up award programs to encourage young scientist.

China has moved quickly to apply agricultural biotechnology and is a world leader in use of genetic techniques in rice culture. Its biopharmaceutical efforts are less inventive. Better standards and more coordination are needed in all areas of biotechnology.
