Airfield pavement creep failure investigation
Article Abstract:
A study was made on pavement creep failure in an airfield in Florida. The results indicated that the failure was caused by consolidation or densification of the low-density base material while overnight parking of heavy aircraft led to pavement depressions. However, there was a question regarding the influence of moisture infiltration in the collapse of the low-density base material. In response to this, there were evidences that the pavement drainage problem became poor after the occurrence of the failure. Collapse due to short-term loading from aircraft was also refuted.

Swimming pools supported by dissimilar bearing strata
Article Abstract:
A study was made on problems associated with the building of a structure, specifically a swimming pool, across a cut-fill transition. Valid points regarding the evaluation of differential settlement and structural damage risk were also provided for the benefit of engineers and designers. The geotechnical design specifics received sufficient evaluation but the proper interpretation of the design drawings was not ensured. On the other hand, the advisability of using overexcavation for swimming pool support in hillside areas was refuted.

Response of residential test foundations to large ground movements
Article Abstract:
A study on the effects of settlement from longwall mining on residential foundations is evaluated. It is argued that the results of the six test foundations presented in the study may not be applied to normal construction without modifying strip footings. It is also shown that the conclusions of the study may be limited to subsidence due to longwall mining. Damages caused by both vertical and horizontal movements are discussed.
