An added dimension in display technology
Article Abstract:
Elizabeth Downing has invented a special glass that generates three-dimensional images. The sugar cube-sized glass glows and can be utilized under ordinary room light without using special devices. The display has potential applications as a visualization tool in weather pattern, airflow and other complex multidimensional research. It may also be used in air traffic control monitors, CAD tools, arcade games and medical diagnostic imaging systems.

Telecommunications seeks its guiding light
Article Abstract:
MIT computer science, materials science and physics and electrical engineering researchers are trying to develop a way to enhance optical fiber information capacity. They are experimenting on a photonic bandgap microcavity resonator that promises increased bandwidth for optical fibers used in telecommunications. The resonator employs wavelength division multiplexing for better carrying capacity.

Shirt-button turbines
Article Abstract:
MIT Gas Turbine Laboratory researchers are trying to develop a miniature turbine engine that is 10 to 20 times more powerful than available chemical batteries. The turbine engine, which would be as small as s shirt button, will be comprised of a compressor wheel, a combustion chamber and a turbine wheel. The effort is funded through a $5-$6 million grant from the Army Research Office.
