An elemental mystery: who really discovered element 43?
Article Abstract:
Ida Tacke, a German chemist, and her colleagues Walter Noddack and Otto Berg, claimed to have discovered element 43, which they named Masurium, in 1925. The validity of their research was not acknowledged by the scientific community, and remains a matter of dispute to the current day. Credit for the discovery of element 43 was given to Carlo Perrier and Emilio Segre, who named it technetium. Scientists are currently reviewing the claims of Tacke and her team in the light of current knowledge.
