Staying off beaten track puts LED researcher a step ahead

Nakamura was the first to develop a bright blue LED. A non-PhD working in a small laboratory, he tamed gallium nitride, a difficult material that others had given up on. His latest project is the blue laser, the last primary color, which when combined with red and green will produce white light.

Infrared astronomers have employed the European Space Agency's ISOCAM camera to measure rates of star formation said to exceed previous estimations by a factor of 10. The camera has also been used to detect brown dwarfs and to identify the composition of supernova remnants.
