Back to school
Article Abstract:
There is increased emphasis by the national curriculum on design and technology and a demand for well qualified people to work in secondary education. Mike Salmon has a degree in mineral process design engineering and was offered a physics and geology teaching job at Alleyns co-educational private day school in S London. He is now technology co-ordinator at the school. David Fenwick took a degree in telecommunications but found the pressure of work at Marconi Space and Defence Systems very difficult, so decided to take a post graduate certificate of education at the Holborn Institute. He also joined Alleyns, and feels that teaching is a relatively secure job, compared to engineering.

Under observation
Article Abstract:
The increasing demand for surveillance cameras in the UK is driving the search for a software that can understand human movements in real time, to recognize different behavior patterns and to inform other machines or human beings that a necessary action may be taken. Oxford University researchers have taken the initiative to commercialize an active vision system which uses hardware and software instead of a remote closed circuit TV camera. The team is also examining the use of zoom within an active vision system.
