Biologists mobilize against anti-genetics referendum: Switzerland
Article Abstract:
Swiss scientists are opposing a referendum to ban the release of genetically altered organisms into the environment as well as all research involving transgenic animals. Drug firms and top scientists, including Nobel laureate Rolf Zinkernagel warn that researchers would have to leave the country.

Germany's bleak future in space
Article Abstract:
Germany merged its space agency, DARA, into the German Aerospace Center (DLA), in an effort to eliminate redundant management costs. But many believe that the move will not be enough to revitalize the space program, and that funding for basic science will be diverted to applied space research.

ESA members balk at space station cost

Germany, France and Italy are suggesting reductions in their funding commitments to the construction of the international space station. Germany wants to decrease funding for ESA's crewed-space program to $2.5 billion for 1996 to 2000.
