On the chain gang
Article Abstract:
Monocoque bicycle frames, made of composites, help in winning bicycle races with their speed and low weight. Monocoque frames have been improved with wind and tunnel tests to increase aerodynamic qualities. Weight saving are made by using phenolic foam for certain parts and by using finite element analysis. The monocoque bicycle frame, used by Chris Broadman to win the gold medal in the 4000 meters race at the Barcelona Olympics, has opened avenues for the development of composite designed bicycles.
