Bold prediction downplays the sun's next peak
Article Abstract:
Solar physicists Sabatino Sofia and Kenneth Schatten have devised a new method of predicting solar activity, based on dynamo theory. Their prediction of the lowest solar maximum in decades, in the year 2000, is at total odds with the 'Farmer's Almanac' numerology-based forecast of an all-time high.

Isotope switch toughens transistors
Article Abstract:
Researchers Joseph Lyding, Karl Hess, and Isik Kizilyalli have discovered that using deuterium instead of hydrogen isotopes can extend the life of a transistor by a factor of 10 to 50. The finding may lead to a better understanding of chip failure and to the development of more durable chips.

Does the magnetic twist crank up the sun's outbursts?
Article Abstract:
Researcher David Rust theorizes that twists in the sun's magnetic field may be a factor in coronal mass ejections and other solar phenomena. The twists may be what causes large arches of the field to break away from the sun.
