Breaching industry-university barriers
Article Abstract:
A group of industrialists and university leaders met in Jun 1993 to discuss ways to improve Japan's academic research. The group drafted a joint statement calling for more cooperative research efforts between universities and industry, more international exchanges and more support for basic research.

New institute seen as brains behind big boost in spending
Article Abstract:
Japan has undertaken a commitment to neuroscience research with the government's announcement that it will spend some $125 million in 1997 and perhaps six times as much in the following five years. The creation of a Brain Science Institute will be central to the project.

Japan centers in on genome work
Article Abstract:
Japan's government plans to double its funding of genome-related research in 1998. The new genome program will be centered on protein research at a large-scale nuclear magnetic resonance imaging center that will be part of a Genetics Frontier Research Center.
