Brightness speeds search for structures great and small
Article Abstract:
The high quality of third generation synchrotron x-rays has made it possible to resolve the structure of molecules that have eluded identification in the past. The refined, high energy rays can be used to analyze crystals that are too small or disordered to be studied with traditional x-rays.

Small spheres lead to big ideas
Article Abstract:
The latest innovations in microscopic sphere-making were unveiled during the Materials Research Society's fall meeting on Nov. 28, 1994. One such innovation involves the use of high-frequency sound to weld hemoglobin proteins together into microspheres two microns in diameter.

New vaccines may ward off urinary tract infections
Article Abstract:
Research is underway to develop a vaccine that could prevent urinary tract infections (UTI). One study on mice, which is designed to prevent bacteria from attaching to their target cells, may yield a strategy that could be used against other infections.
