Calculus reform sparks a backlash

A ten-year-old movement to reform the teaching of calculus has now spawned a growing number of critics. A debate at the American Mathematical Society and Mathematical Assoc of America meetings focused on whether the reforms 'dumb down' the subject and make students too dependent on calculators.

A visit to Asymptopia yields insight into set structures
Article Abstract:
Some mathematicians are using asymptotic rather than exact solutions to problems involving large systems. One example is Jeong-Hon Kim's work in Ramsey theory that produced a solution to a differential equation on systems that form within a structure.
