Can risky mergers save hospital-based research?
Article Abstract:
Research hospitals are resorting to mergers to cut costs and reduce grant competition. Some are finding that a merger does not solve their financial problems and often exacerbates them. The merger of Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, MA, is examined.

Putative cancer gene shows up in development instead
Article Abstract:
Researchers have discovered evidence suggesting that a gene implicated in colon cancer called Deleted in Colorectal Cancer (DCC) may actually have nothing to do with the progression of cancer. DCC may simply be located close to some unknown tumor-suppressor gene.

Researchers attending the June 1996 meeting of the Society for Developmental Biology demonstrated that the inedible weed called teosinte is a close relative of corn, and that a small change in teosinte's DNA can alter flower development.
