Changes in Brookhaven shock national lab system

Energy Sec Federico Pena surprised the scientific community in May 1997 with the announcement that the Brookhaven National Laboratory's contract with its operator, Associated Universities Inc, would be cancelled due to lapses in the management of the lab's environmental, safety and health concerns.

Goldin drops plan for new institutes
Article Abstract:
NASA has dropped plans to create nonprofit science institutes that would conduct much of the agency's research. The decision came June 7, 1996, after resistance from both the administration and Congress doomed the plan. NASA will try to strengthen academic ties to protect its research programs.

Joint mission gets off to slow start

Numerous delays have been plaguing the US-Russian space program. The 3-year research program, which aims to study the long-term effects of microgravity on the human body, will involve Russia's Mir space station and the space shuttle Atlantis.
