Fate of atmospherically deposited polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Chesepeake Bay
Article Abstract:
This study investigated surface sediments of the Chesapeake Bay using samples collected seasonally from five sites to examine the factors controlling polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) distributions. Low water solubility of PAHs makes them very particle reactive, and because of this they usually accumulate in sediments.

Biodegradation of bicyclic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in anaerobic enrichments
Article Abstract:
Researchers from the University of Washington used fluidized bed reactors to enrich bacterial cultures from creosote-contaminated marine sediments, making it possible to anaerobically degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with nitrate or sulfide reduction.
