Funding for research into the health effects of electromagnetic fields emitted by power lines was discontinued after a report from the National Cancer Institute stated the no conclusive evidence proved any relation between electromagnetic fields and the increasing incidence of childhood leukemia.

A number of floating platform structures are being constructed to test their applicability to the military and commercial purposes. Floating-platform technology is being considered for a mobile, marine airbase as well as a space vehicle launch facility.
