Composite materials edge into mainstream construction
Article Abstract:
Attendees to the First International Conference on Composites in Infrastructure, held in Tucson, AZ, agree that composite materials will find increased application in public works construction. The impressive mechanical properties of composites and the corresponding savings in construction time and costs are enough to compensate for the lack of understanding regarding the materials' possible degradation in alkali environment and ultraviolet exposure. Experts agree that future research will be able to address these concerns and help drive down costs.

Tall buildings triumph
Article Abstract:
The Structures Congress in Chicago, IL, in Apr 1996 highlighted tall buildings despite the belief that demand for skyscrapers had diminished. Among the tall buildings presented at the conference were: the Jin Mao towers in Shanghai, China; and Petronas towers in Malaysia. Conferees discussed different methods of handling seismic loads, soil quality, wind strength and water tables. Among the techniques promoted were: electrorheological active and passive dampers, steel movement resisting frames and prestressed masonry.

Securing the stone
Article Abstract:
Building exteriors have long been clad with natural stone and modern technology has developed stone veneer slabs that are just 3 cm thick for use on many of the world's high-rise buildings. However, such slabs are potentially problematical at their connection points and engineers need to consider damage such as edge spalling and localized breaks as well as flexural stress.
