Costa Rican parks: fields of conflict
Article Abstract:
Several problems plagued the Costa Rican government and National Park Service during their efforts to establish national parks in the 1970s. The Cahuitans, for instance, opposed the creation of the Cahuita National Park since this removed their accuses to the area's fisheries, beaches and cocoa plantations while the decline of the country's economy in 1975 increased the number of miners prospecting for gold within the Corcovado National Park.

Conservation pays big dividends in Caribbean
Article Abstract:
Several Caribbean marine parks prove that national parks can be managed in ways that generate funds without compromising park resources. The Virgin Islands National Park, for instance, contributes $23.4 million to the island's economy from purchases made by resorts and visitors while the Saba Marine Park in the Netherlands Antilles developed a fund raising program involving fees, souvenir sales and donations.
