Survey shows global emphasis on people development in manufacturing
Article Abstract:
Management consultants Deloitte Consulting conducted a series of surveys among over 800 manufacturing firms in Europe, North and South America and the Asia-Pacific region to evaluate these companies' manufacturing needs. Results showed the growing need for firms to provide increasingly customized products in a single, worldwide marketplace in the absence of protected domestic enclaves. However, results also revealed that only 23% of manufacturers have world class market research capabilities. The most immediate challenge for manufacturers is identified as the need to confront the globalization trend.

UK design expertise questioned again
Article Abstract:
A survey of UK and German manufacturing companies by the London Business School and IBM revealed that design practices are less superior compared to their German counterparts. This is caused by the practice of taking an unplanned, unsystematic and unfocused attitude towards design where the designers fail to consider manufacturing procedures and customer satisfaction. The report points out that the main elements of manufacturing competitiveness are manufacturing capability, costs, investment and design.

UK manufacturers run hard to stay still
Article Abstract:
British firm Ingersoll Engineers has released the 1996 Trends and Attitudes Survey in Manufacturing Industry which revealed that the industry's move away from traditional management has done little to improve the industry's global competitiveness over the past five years. The survey also showed that a substantial number of firms have adopted a 'focus-based' approach in operations and management. The report ended with a list of questions to guide managers in enhancing their firms' global competitiveness.
