Count the money
Article Abstract:
The Grand Prix winner of the 1995 Design Effectiveness Awards proves that industrial design can be profitable. The Royal Mail form for redirection orders was redesigned reducing the number of incomplete or inaccurate forms from 86% to less than 10%. The cost of redesign was recovered in only 17 days and customers have expressed satisfaction over the new design. The winning design was chosen based on its contribution to commercial success which include increased sales, profitability, market share growth, change in consumer attitudes, and reduced manufacturing costs.

Train, learn and make money
Article Abstract:
The UK government funded Teaching Company Scheme is transferring design management and design techniques to companies which are not able to develop product development programs internally and as a result are facing extinction. The scheme, developed at Brunel's Design Research Centre, allows the companies to take a designer at a subsidized rate for three years. Expert help is also provided. Results have been stupendous and show large increase in companies' turnovers.

Car, bus, train?
Article Abstract:
Improved public transportation is not damaging to the automotive industry. Although environmental pollution and massive road coverage are often given greater concern than a car's personal mobility advantage, this does not complete the argument for public transportation. Mass transport systems must be reasonably optimal alternatives to private transport so that people will give them greater preference than car ownership.
