Curbing emissions: pressures, problems
Article Abstract:
The signatories to the Framework Convention on Climate Change 1992, pledged to limit greenhouse gas emission by 2000 to the levels of 1990. However, the Berlin Mandate of 1993, adopted a one-sided policy that severely restricts emission from developed countries while ignoring the same in developing states. This strategy constrains real environmental benefits and risks the economic well being of developed states. Despite the higher costs of short-term aggressive policies to reduce emission, there is less consensus on the adoption and potential workability of other emission reduction schemes.

Shifting gears: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the United States faces some tough choices
Article Abstract:
Environmental concerns such as the reduction in the use of fossil fuels and the cutdown in greenhouse gas emissions are pushing the US government to make some tough choices. The US has made a commitment at the Conference on Global Climate Change held in Kyoto, Japan, to reduce its greenhouse emission not later than the year 2012. It has three options in reducing the amount of petroleum that it consumes, namely, decreasing the amount of miles driven annually, increasing the fuel efficiency of vehicles and substituting alternative fuels for gasoline.
