Seismic retrofitting: spending to save
Article Abstract:
Three case studies illustrating the importance of seismic retrofitting are given. These are the the Golden Gate Bridge, the 9720 WilshireBoulevard building in Beverly Hills, CA, and the Bear Valley Dam in Big Bear, CA. The case studies show that seismic retrofitting can save lives and money. Infrastructures and structures whose appearance is a crucial element of their value present challenges in doing retrofit work. The retrofit can be done as a form of insurance, such as preventing costly bridge reconstruction work and protecting a unique structure.

Small-government GIS
Article Abstract:
Public works engineers are using geographic information systems (GIS) to design and construct roads, create databases and plan storm-water-management programs. GISs have the graphics capability of a computer-aided-design system and the information-storing features of a database. But GISs require large investments in the data that it will use. Money has to be spent in checking if data are accurate and in standard form andentering them into a database.
