Design-build goes public
Article Abstract:
The public sector is now using design-build as a construction delivery method. Its advantages over the conventional design-bid-build method include easier communication between the architect/engineer, contractor and owner, cheaper construction costs and faster project completion time. However, large bidding expenses, more risks for the contractor, financial constraints on the designer's approach and the owner's financial status are some deterrents to the use of design-build. Still, design-build is considered a favorable alternative as a project delivery method because of its good results.

Small-dam rehabs
Article Abstract:
Economic constraints have made small-dam rehabilitation a problem for owners. Federal policies exempt the government from small-dam maintenance responsibility although some states have provided loan funds to assist dam owners. Financial strains have led owners to explore cost-effective maintenance and repair methods such as roller-compacted concrete, geotextiles and siphon spillways. Three dam repair projects which illustrate innovative techniques are the Fellows Lake Dam in Springfield, MO, the Storrie Lake Dam near Las Vegas, NV, and the Reeves Lake Dam in Cobb County, GA.

Expert systems: ready to hit the road?
Article Abstract:
The use of expert systems has been applied in structural design and construction management. A few expert systems have also been used in pavement rehabilitation. Used for this purpose, expert systems are helpful in speeding up project design, assisting departments of transportation schedule repairs and imminent expenditures and training engineers. Expert systems could gain more popularity of use once hindrances such as cost, availability of data and resistance to change are eliminated.
