The Engineers Joint Contract Documents Committee (EJCDC) has created standard design-build contract documents that define responsibilities and risks engineers face. The documents focus on such issues as the design-builder selection process, preparation of the request for proposal (RFP), scope definition, standards of care, warranties and guarantees, geotechnical investigations, quality and communications.

The standard ambiguous terms found in building agreements and construction contract documents can be subject to interpretation. Therefore, ambiguous legal terms must be identified, and new words coined in substitution after consultation with experienced construction engineers. The new words must properly define the procedure to be carried out.
