New York building is dressed for success
Article Abstract:
The underground loading dock of Barneys New York store in midtown Manhattan was constructed through a unique method. The building has subcellar ceilings that are too low for delivery trucks to pass through. Contractor Lehrer McGovern Bovis (LMB) excavated 2,000 cu yd of schist rock in the subcellar by using chemicals. It took eight months to destroy the rock layer which extended up to eight ft in some areas. But fiveremaining building columns would block the route of the truck. LMB hydraulically jacked up the building by 3/8 in to remove it and put five new columns. The trucks can pass then through and proceed to a 'turntable' that position them toward the loading dock.

It's all in the bracing
Article Abstract:
The renovation of the Aquarium Station stop along the subway system in Cambridge, MA, involves the construction of a new entrance from the street to the station. The difficulty encountered in the entrance construction is the protection of the historic State Street Block buildings built in the 1850s. Weidlinger Associates Inc, the contractor of the project, used a bracing system that reduced soil movement during the excavation of the entrance. A composite T-panel slurry wall system was applied which used structural steel instead of concrete as the system's web.

Stabilizing the stacks
Article Abstract:
An innovative soil-nailing system was used to support the Thomas Hall Library in Bryn Mawr, PA, during construction of subterranean building adjacent to the library's West Wing. The system consists of a seven-inch-thick shotcrete wall over a heavy gauge wire mesh and permanent epoxy-coated threaded reinforcing nails, measuring 20 to 25 ft long. Spencer White and Prentis Corp was hired by Wohlsen Construction Co, the project's contractor, to design the support system.
