Dogfight erupts over animal studies in the Serengeti

Biologist Roger Burrows has charged that handling by researchers was the main cause in the decimation of wild dog populations in Tanzania's Serengeti National Park. Other experts dispute his theory, but Tanzanian authorities may be obstructing handling studies of other animals.

New virus variant killed Serengeti cats
Article Abstract:
Researchers have confirmed that canine distemper virus is the cause of an epidemic that killed over 1/3 of the lion population of Serengeti. Genetic analysis indicates that the organism is a new variant that probably mutated from the form that infects domestic dogs.
