Varmus proposes to scrap the RAC
Article Abstract:
Varmus announced that the practice of submitting each new gene therapy trial to public review has served its purpose, and that the Recombinant DNA Advisory Committee will be dissolved. He also proposed regular NIH workshops on gene therapy. Critics of the plan will have 15 days for discussion.

Varmus puts his stamp on NIH
Article Abstract:
Varmus was a highly acclaimed scientist with no administration experience when he took over an NIH plagued by internal squabbling and looming budget cuts. Now two years later most agree he has done an excellent job. Varmus' accomplishments in recruiting and operations reform are described.

NIH Clinical Center gets a boost
Article Abstract:
A review commissioned by HHS Sec Donna Shalala and chaired by Helen Smits recommended that NIH's neglected Clinical Center hospital be reorganized with centralized management, and an independent budget. Shalala promised to request funds for a new hospital.
