EPA drops 16-year PCB import ban
Article Abstract:
The ban on the import of wastes with high concentrations of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) to the US has been lifted. The EPA has announced on Mar. 18, 1996 that it is abolishing the 16-year ban on imports of wastes with 50 ppm or more PCBs. The move is expected to generate increased business for US companies that treat, incinerate, dispose or recycle PCB-tainted wastes, particularly from Canada and Mexico. Environmental groups have challenged the overturning of the ban, claiming most of the PCB wastes brought into the country will eventually be incinerated, resulting in increased dioxin emissions.

House slashes EPA budget, restricts regulatory actions
Article Abstract:
The full House of Representatives has passed a budget bill for 1995 that reduced EPA funding by $2.3 billion and established restrictions for specific regulatory actions. Attempts led by Rep. Sherwood L. Boehlert to remove 18 riders attached to the budget package was overturned by the House, which voted 228 to 193 for the bill. VP Al Gore said that government will veto the bill passed by the House even if the riders were removed.

EPA toxic use reporting plan hits strong industry opposition
Article Abstract:
Chemical manufacturers strongly opposed EPA's plans to expand the annual Toxics Release Inventory. They argued that collecting chemical use information is an intrusion into their operations. However, EPA challenged that such information should be made available to the public since they have the right to know about the toxic materials around them.
