Panel turns up heat on fusion with flat funding plan
Article Abstract:
A presidential panel headed by energy professor John Holdren will recommend to the President's Committee of Advisors on Science and Technology an indefinite $45-million reduction in funding for the US fusion program. The panel hopes to save the fusion program from even worse Congress-proposed cuts.

A harsh light falls on NIF

Supporters of plans to build the $1.2 billion NIF maintain that the massive device is necessary to properly maintain the nuclear stockpile in the absence of nuclear testing. Opponents believe the giant fusion laser is unnecessary and may not meet its technical goals.
