Effect of wrought product thickness and stress ratio on fatigue crack growth behavior of a quaternary aluminium-lithium alloy
Article Abstract:
A quaternary aluminium-lithium (Al-LI) alloy was analyzed for the effect of thickness on fatigue crack growth (FCG) behavior at varying stress ratio. FCG behavior was influenced by the thickness in two opposite ways which were dependent on stress ratio. The observed behavior was rationalized by invoking the crack closure concept. The main governing mechanism in the alloy was the roughness-induced crack closure. The extent of crack closure and FCG behavior were influenced by factors such as severity of plane strain condition and fracture surface asperity size.

Generalization of the Coffin equations with respect to the effect of large mean plastic strain
Article Abstract:
The generalization of Coffin-Manson equations involves the introduction of a correction factor that accounts for mean plastic strain to the kinetic law for the rate of damage per cycle. The law is integrated under the assumption of a stable hysteresis loop. The formula allows the study of fatigue life of structures after their change of state from transient ratchetting to plastic shakedown. The formula is also applicable for superimposed cyclic and monotonic strain.
