Enhancing biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons with guanidinium fatty acids
Article Abstract:
A nitrogen-containing surfactant enhances the bioremediation rate of hydrocarbon contaminants in soils. Guanidinium cocoate, synthesized from coconut acid and guanidine carbonate, was added to the contaminated soils. Oxygen and carbon dioxide respirometry in soil slurries or periodic measurements of hydrocarbon residues in unsaturated soil microcosms were used to evaluate rates of biodegradation enhancement of nonvolatile hydrocarbons. Rate enhancements were noted in both soil slurries and unsaturated soil microcosms when these were treated with 500-1500 ppm of the surfactant.

Effect of micellar solubilization on biodegradation rates of hydrocarbons
Article Abstract:
The influence of extracellular surface-active compounds produced by microorganisms on the biodegradation rates of the hydrocarbon contaminants present in groundwater is studied. Experiments are conducted wherein two species of Gram-negatoive bacteria are deposited into mineral salts medium containing hydrocarbons. The necessary measurements are then obtained using a Brinkman Probe colorimeter and a YSI Model 58 probe. Results reveal that the extracellular surface-active compunds are capable of enhancing the biodegradation rate of hydrocarbons.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the rate of in-situ toluene biodegradation by naturally occurring attached microorganisms in a contaminated part of a small stream in Wilmington and Woburn, MA. Results revealed that biodegradation was responsible for 41% and 66% of the decrease in toluene levels in the river during the high flow and low flow season. Biodegradation rate constants were affected by stream temperature, but not by stream velocity.
