Enrichment of high-rate PCE dechlorination and comparative study of lactate, methanol, and hydrogen as electron donors to sustain activity
Article Abstract:
The potential of lactate, methanol and hydrogen as electron donors in the dechlorination of tetrachloroethene was investigaged, with all three substances showing similar effectivities. All of the tested electron donors were able to decrease the half-life of tetrachloroethylene from 13 h to less than 2 h, and tetrachloroethylene degraded as 80% vinyl chloride and 20% ethylene. The activity of the electron donors were enhanced by high partial pressure of atmospheric hydrogen and the presence of active methanogenic reactants.

Use of stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses for monitoring the pathways and rates of intrinsic and enhanced in situ biodegradation
Article Abstract:
It is believed that the use of stable oxygen and carbon isotope analyses will help in the accurate identification of the occurrence, pathways, and rates of intrinsic or enhanced in situ biodegradation. A recent laboratory test utilized diesel fuel and a mixed microbial culture to demonstrate the monitoring capability of a combined stable carbon and oxygen isotope analyses of carbon dioxide and molecular oxygen, respectively.

Comment on "Oxidation-Reduction Capacities of Aquifer Solids." (includes author's reply)
Article Abstract:
The role of oxidation and reduction capacities of aquifer solids in the geochemistry of groundwater systems are disputed. Inability to provide supporting data is cited as the reason for the disagreement. Conclusions derived on the abiotic and biotic decomposition of hydrogen peroxide and on increased reduction capacity due to aquifer solids are the particular issues presented.
