FHWA showcases deep-foundation construction advances
Article Abstract:
The Dec 1994 international conference on the design and construction of deep foundations, sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration, helped record advances in testing pile capacity and in monitoring devices capable of reducing costs involved in deep foundation construction. New devices exhibited in the conference included the Osterberg cell, Statmatic load testing device and hydraulic hammers, which are capable of precise and cost-effective load testing during the construction of bridges and other deep foundation structures.

FHWA shifts more authority to division level
Article Abstract:
The Federal Highway Admn restructured its headquarters and field offices which aim to offer better services to customers. The changes were brought about by the reduction of its workforce and the elimination of regional offices with resource centers under the provisions of the Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century. A significant modification of the field structure was the program authority bestowed on division offices. Also, the modified structure generated five core business areas.

FHWA's Jane Garvey endorses HITEC as key to innovation
Article Abstract:
Jane Garvey, the Deputy Administrator of the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), stressed the importance of the Civil Engineering Research Foundation's Highway Innovative Technology Center (HITEC) in the highway system of the US. She believes that HITEC can be innovative and can hasten the progress of the highway systems by making use of new technology. HITEC can improve the performance of highways, bridges and streets with the full support of the FHWA.
