Filling in the gaps
Article Abstract:
Advanced Refractory Technologies (ART) has developed new morphological patterns for aluminium nitride that enhance its thermal conductivity, making it suitable for a thermally conductive, electrically insulating filler for polymer composites. A thermal conductivity of 4 W/mK can be achieved for filled systems through a mixture of particle shapes and sizes and an alternative approach which may produce thermal conductivities of up to 40 W/mK is being developed. Conducting materials are also used as fillers for electronic equipment to shield against electromagnetics and electrostatic discharge.

Ockham's razor
Article Abstract:
Ockham's razor or the parsimony principle, which is being used to assess new knowledge, has been used by several thinkers even before medieval times. Explicitly formulated during the Middle Ages, Ockham's razor was probably passed on to Europe through the University of Paris and several scholastic thinkers, including William of Ockham. Ockham's razor is a cognitive ability as shown by the various "economical" theories posited by thinkers of different cultures. It also has a dual character with implications on the rejection and acceptance of new scientific knowledge.

Gaps, Pseudogaps, and Occam's Razor
Article Abstract:
Advances in the preparation of excellent single crystals of novel materials and in angle-resolved photoemission have led to the discovery of new phenomena, and new theories to explain these phenomena. It is suggested that some of the apparently new phenomena may actually result from extrinsic effects not attributable to the fundamental nature of a material's electronic structure.
